Are you practically gifted and want to earn money as soon as possible? As a metal technology specialist, you can start your career after just two years of training! Your job is to manufacture components or functional assemblies, e.g. for machine or vehicle construction, in series or individual production. Here you’ll work on state-of-the-art turning and milling centers.

Before the respective operation, you determine the production parameters, set the machines, clamp things like metal blanks in the holding fixtures, and align them. Finally, you start up the machines and monitor the production processes and the quality of the products. You’ll check, for example, whether the dimensions and surface quality of manufactured workpieces comply with the specifications.

Training content:

The two-year apprenticeship as a metal technology specialist will take place in the training company and at vocational school. You’ll spend the first six months of your apprenticeship at a training center. You can decide whether you want to go to Trier, Wittlich, or Birkenfeld.

Aligning, clamping, and manual or mechanical cutting or forming of workpieces
Defining and setting production parameters depending on the workpiece, material, and tool
Creating and optimizing CNC programs with standard path commands
Manufacturing workpieces from different materials with machining processes

By the way: The “Metal Technology Specialist” job has only been around since 2013. It replaces eleven other training occupations, like parts processor and wire-drawer.

Your prerequisites:

The most important prerequisite for apprenticing as a metal technology specialist is craftsmanship and careful, precise work.

It’s also good if you meet these apprenticeship requirements:

You know some things about technology and machines.
You have good spatial awareness.
You’re a good team player.
You have a secondary school diploma.

Extend your apprenticeship

If during your apprenticeship, you find that you like learning, you can extend your training. The training period will then count towards the 3½-year apprenticeship as a cutting machine operator for automatic lathe systems.
